Base64 Encode and Decode
Text to Base64 and back, UTF-8 safe and URL-safe if you want.
Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent or stored.
Good to know
Text is first converted to bytes as UTF-8 and then encoded. Umlauts and emojis come back unchanged.
base64url replaces + and / with - and _ and drops the = padding. That way it fits into JWTs and URLs.
Base64 is not encryption. Anyone can turn it back.
Frequently asked questions
Is Base64 secure?
No, it is only an encoding. For secrets you need encryption.
Why does decoding fail?
Either the text is not valid Base64, or the bytes do not form UTF-8 text, for example with images or binary data.
Is my text transmitted?
No. Everything stays in your browser.
