When the phone rings or a WhatsApp message pops up, you usually do not suspect anything bad. That is exactly what fraudsters count on. Recently we heard a story from right here in our neighborhood in Lübeck that confirmed why we built Scampilot. It is a story with a happy ending, but it could have turned out very differently.
“Hi Grandma, this is my new number…”
It began like almost all of these cases. An elderly woman from Lübeck received a message on her smartphone. Unknown number. The profile picture? Blurry or missing. The text, however, sounded familiar: “Hi Grandma, my phone broke. This is my new number. Can you delete the old one?”
The woman was at first happy to hear from her grandson. A short chat developed. But then came the classic turning point: the request for money. An urgent bill had to be paid, online banking did not work on the new phone yet. Could she advance it for a moment? Almost 2,000 euros.
At that moment the alarm bells rang for the woman from Lübeck, or rather for her daughter, who happened to be visiting. The story sounded plausible, but the uneasy gut feeling remained.
The quick check that changed everything
Instead of transferring the money right away or panicking, the daughter remembered Scampilot. She had heard of our free platform, which we developed here in Lübeck.
She opened scampilot.de, chose the “Check text / SMS message” function and pasted the chat history into the field.
The result came back in a split second: RED. Danger.
Our AI recognized the pattern immediately: the typical opening, the change of phone number, the emotional pressure and the money demand that followed. Scampilot delivered not only the warning but also the explanation: “This is, with very high probability, the so-called grandparent scam.”
Safety instead of shock
The result was clear. The two of them called the real grandson on his “old” (and only genuine) number. He picked up right away. His phone was of course not broken, and he knew nothing about a bill.
The fraud was exposed before a single cent was transferred. The relief was enormous. Not only because the money was safe, but because nobody had felt helpless.
Why we built Scampilot
It is for moments like this that we built Scampilot at Pixel & Process. We are techies, developers and strategists, yes. But we are also people with parents, grandparents and friends we want to protect.
Digitalization brings us many advantages, but it often makes the fraudsters' job far too easy. Unfortunately, artificial intelligence is also used by the “other side” to make messages look more and more genuine. Our answer to that is to use AI for good.
Scampilot is:
- Free: Safety must not be a question of budget.
- Anonymous: No registration, no data hoarding: the same attitude to data sovereignty that we apply in customer projects.
- Simple: A traffic-light system that everyone understands, from 8 to 88 years old.
We are proud that our work here in Lübeck makes a real difference. If we can prevent even a single fraud, every hour of development was worth it.
